Tick Safety Pro-Tips from Our Family
1. Put your clothes in the dryer on high, ten minutes to wave those ticks bye bye!
2. Get a set of permethrin-treated hiking clothes
3. Sing the Tick Check Song after every hike, of course!
4. Take a quick shower after a hike to wash away unattached ticks.
5. Stay on the trail! No high grass/brush.
6. Keep lawn short, remove brush/leave/stick piles, no mice playhouses (stone walls etc.)
7. Monthly lawn spraying of highly-rated organic insecticide.
8. We like The Tick Key for nymph tick removal and some adult ticks. We use the Tick Ease (special tick tweezers), often, too, especially for adults. Start at mouth parts and remove whole ticks. Try not to mangle.
9. Put tick in baggie, write name of lucky person, date, and where you found it on person. Write info on calendar too and a note to check location two weeks after. Keep tabs on odd symptoms (not always rash, note anything peculiar). Update doctor.
10. Mail off tick to lab if you suspect anything.
Tick Check Song Lyrics
It’s time for a tick check
It’s time for a tick check
Follow along while you sing this song
It’s time for a tick check
Start at your feet, look between every toe
Up to the ankles, and around we go
Follow me now to the back of your knees
The right one, left one, if you please
Down the calves, and up to your thighs
We’re looking around with our wide eyes
For a tiny little dot that could sit on a pin
Find a tick, you win!
CHORUS
Under the undies and on each hip
We double check there, then we take a trip
Up to the belly button, anybody home?
Just a little piece of lint talking on the phone–Hello?
Hop on over to the elbow pits
Ride to the shoulders, don’t call it quits
Throw your hands up in the air
Peek under your arms, ‘cause you’re well aware
CHORUS
Hey there friend will you check my back
And my neck, and around my ears
I’ll be doing fine if you look at my hair line
If you find a tick here’s what you gotta do
Grab a tick key and a tweezers, too
Carefully remove and put ‘em in a baggy
Write the date, now celebrate
‘Cause you’re done with your tick check
You’re done with your tick check
It’s not so long when you sing a song
You’re done with your tick check
